About Me
Hey! I'm Merritt Hughes, and I am a rising junior journalism major at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. I am heavily involved in The Berkeley Beacon, Emerson's only student run newspaper. I served as Co-Opinion Editor in both Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 and was a staff writer in Fall 2023, contributing more than 20 articles in the 2023-2024 school year. I also was responsible for weekly layout, editing stories, and communicating with staff writers and correspondents.
Fingerprints in my clay
I was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, and my heart is still there in many pieces to this day. Though I moved 1400 miles for college, I will always find myself coming back to Shreveport. If my life was clay atop a potter's wheel, Shreveport had the biggest impact on my clay shape. Friends and family have left fingerprints in my clay, shaping and impacting me in different ways that will always be a part of me.
I don't know where my prospective career in journalism will take me, but I know for now it takes me back to Shreveport and the people who raised me, the fingerprints who shaped me. I want to make a difference in the world, and there's no better place to start than my hometown.
